Agropoli is not only a feast for the eyes, but also for the palate. Being in the heart of Cilento means being in the homeland of the Mediterranean Diet. Here, food is more than just nourishment, it’s a ritual made of authentic ingredients, centuries-old traditions, and a deep love for the land.

If you’re staying at Hotel Mare, here are three gastronomic experiences you absolutely can’t miss during your stay.

1. Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP (White Gold)

You can’t say you’ve been to Agropoli without visiting one of the dairies in the nearby Piana del Sele. Buffalo mozzarella should be eaten very fresh, preferably at room temperature.

  • Our advice: Try the “Zizzona” or the bocconcini: a milky explosion that will make you forget any other mozzarella you’ve ever tried.

2. The Anchovies of Menaica

A Slow Food Presidium that tells the story of local fishermen. These anchovies are caught using an ancient technique that uses a special net (the menaica) and immediately salted.

  • How to enjoy them: Simply marinated with a drizzle of Cilento extra virgin olive oil or “mbuttunate” (stuffed), according to the recipe of the grandmothers of Agropoli.

3. Cilentana Pizza (the real one!)

Warning: Don’t just call it “pizza.” Authentic Cilentan pizza is distinguished by its dough, often made with a blend of local flours, and, above all, its cheese. Instead of mozzarella, a generous amount of grated Cilento cacioricotta is sprinkled over the cooked tomato.

Why try it: It has a rustic and authentic flavor that captures the essence of our hills.

Want an unforgettable dinner? Ask at reception! The Hotel Mare staff knows the best restaurants and agritourisms in the area, where tradition is still alive and well. We can reserve a table overlooking the harbor or recommend a winery for a tasting of local wines like Aglianico or Fiano.

Enjoy your meal and enjoy your culinary journey!
